Tips For Jewelry Care

One of the things we do most in our store is to inspect and clean jewelry.  Even if it wasn’t purchased from us we are more than happy to take a look at it and be sure the prongs aren’t too worn and the stones aren’t loose so that there are not problems with it down the road.  Our philosophy is to be proactive rather than reactive.

Having a jeweler that you can trust with your jewelry is the most important part of jewelry care.  Knowing that you can take your pieces in and have them examined and maintained gives you that peace of mind that you and your jewelry are being taken care of.  Not only do we check for issues with the prongs or metal, we also know which stones can and cannot be in the ultrasonic cleaner because of heat and/or chemical intolerance.  Certain stones and metals can be damaged beyond repair so you can trust that we know what to look for and how to take care of your pieces.

When you bring your pieces into Bulow Jewelers for inspection and cleaning, the first thing we will do is take a loupe and look closely at the stones to make sure it’s not damaged and that the prongs or channels are not worn to the point that the stones could become loose or worse yet, fall out.  The same for bracelets and necklaces.  We examine the connections and safety clasps to be sure they are not worn and that the clasps are all functioning properly.  All of this is to ensure that your jewelry is safe to wear on a daily basis without the worry of it breaking or being lost.

Another way to care for your jewelry is to make sure that you are not exposing them to harsh cleaners and or chemicals such as bleach.  This can discolor and make the metal pit depending on the metal.  Chlorine in a pool or hot tub can also be damaging so it’s best to remove any rings when swimming or lounging in the hot tub.  Yes, this applies for the guys as well!

We always tell people to use common sense and realize that there ARE activities that you do that you should not be doing with your rings on.  Then we realize that one persons “common sense” can be vastly different from others. Time and time again we see bent or badly scratched rings because someone moved a fridge or lifted weights or because we are in Colorado, rock climbing or hiking.  Metal to metal contact is the best way to severely damage jewelry.  However, just because it gets damaged doesn’t mean that it can’t be repaired but it best to not go down that road because it IS avoidable.  Because of this, it is of utmost importance to make sure your jewelry is properly insured in the event that there is irreparable damage.

To ensure that your jewelry stays amazing for years to come, make sure it is properly stored when it is not being worn.  We suggest storing most pieces in the boxes they came in when purchased or in a jewelry box where the pieces, specifically the stones, are not touching any other pieces so they are not get scratched or damaged.  With necklaces it is extremely important to hang them to prevent tangling or chain damage.  Especially if there are multiple strands of chain on the necklace.  We have spent many hours untangling such nightmares!

We hope these tips and tricks help with the overall care of your jewelry.  Please stop in and see us at Bulow Jewelers any time for your free cleaning and inspection.  Proactive is always better then reactive!
